The Price of Presence

Why do rates vary so much from one practitioner to another? A candid look at what you may actually be investing in.

It’s a fair question: Why can two practitioners in the same city, seemingly offering similar experiences, have very different rates?

The simplest answer is that you are rarely paying only for the hour itself.

Like any highly personalized service, pricing reflects the experience surrounding that hour—the environment, preparation, professionalism, reputation, overhead, and sometimes years of work that made the experience possible in the first place.

Reputation Has Value

Longevity matters.

For me, a decade of building my reputation represents something much larger than simply having been around for a long time. It represents consistency, discretion, reliability, relationships, reviews, and the integrity of a persona and brand I have carefully nurtured over the years.

In addition to my own practice, I have also trained other practitioners and provided consulting within the industry, sharing my knowledge base and experience to help others refine their approach, professionalism, and client experience. That work is often invisible to the outside world, but it reflects years of accumulated insight and responsibility within the field.

Trust is difficult to quantify on a spreadsheet, but in an intimate environment, it may be one of the most valuable things someone can offer.

The Space Matters

Then there are the wonderfully unromantic realities of creating a romantic experience.

A beautiful, private studio has considerable overhead. Location matters, too. I intentionally prioritize privacy, safety, accessibility, and an environment where someone can arrive and immediately feel comfortable.

Those things cost more—and I believe they’re worth it.

I never want the surroundings to feel like an afterthought. The experience begins before we ever touch.

The Invisible Preparation

There is also an enormous amount of preparation that happens before someone walks through the door.

Hair. Nails. Skincare. Wardrobe. Pilates. Bodywork. Continuing to take care of myself physically so that I have the stamina and presence required to do what I do well.

Some of it is glamorous.

Much of it decidedly is not.

But all of it contributes to what eventually appears effortless.

Taking Care of the Person Behind the Persona

Self-care deserves its own conversation.

This profession can be emotionally demanding, and there are aspects of living within such a private, clandestine world that are difficult to explain unless you’ve experienced it yourself.

For me, psychotherapy has been an important part of maintaining my emotional well-being and having an appropriate place to process my own life.

I don’t believe my clients—or my friends and family—should have to carry the emotional weight of my profession.

Taking care of myself allows me to arrive with something left to give.

Visibility Has a Price Tag

Advertising is another substantial expense that people rarely see.

Platforms often have different membership levels, visibility options, placement opportunities, photography requirements, website expenses, and promotional costs. As with most businesses, greater visibility usually requires greater investment.

Being independent doesn’t mean operating without overhead.

Quite the opposite.

A Gentle Note on First Contact

When you first reach out, your message will always come directly to me. I personally read and respond to every initial inquiry whenever I am available, because I believe that first exchange should always carry a personal touch.

If I am away or otherwise unavailable, my assistant will handle the logistics and correspondence on my behalf to ensure everything continues to run smoothly and discreetly. However, I will always return to you personally to continue the conversation and guide things forward myself.

It’s important to me that you still feel me in that first hello—because you are.

And Then There Is Time

One of the greatest luxuries I can offer someone is actually quite simple:

My undivided attention.

That is one reason having an assistant has become invaluable to me.

However, when I`m on a date or unavailable: Correspondence, screening, scheduling, confirmations, and the countless administrative details behind an independent business don’t disappear simply because I’m spending time with someone.

Without support, there can be a temptation to glance at an email, wonder whether an inquiry needs an immediate response, or mentally keep track of what needs to happen afterward.

I don’t want to do that.

When I’m with you, I want to be with you.

Having someone helping behind the scenes means I can put the phone away and give the person in front of me the presence they deserve.

So, What Are You Actually Paying For?

You’re paying for more than a block of time.

You’re paying for preparation.

Environment.

Discretion.

Consistency.

Communication.

Reliability.

Experience.

And, perhaps most importantly, presence.

None of this means that a higher rate automatically makes one practitioner “better” than another. Pricing is personal, markets differ, and every independent practitioner decides what makes sense for their own business.

But there is often far more behind a rate than meets the eye.

I think of it much like hospitality: the very best experiences can feel remarkably effortless precisely because someone has put an extraordinary amount of effort into making them feel that way.

The luxury isn’t simply the setting. It’s being able to forget about everything else once you’re there.

Deeply yours,

Andrea
